Discover Vilamoura: One of the best coastal towns in Portugal

Considered one of the busiest tourist destinations in the whole of Europe, the town of Vilamoura is one of the best coastal towns in Portugal. It is located in the western part of the Algarve, in the south of the country.

Unlike many places in the region which are dedicated to tourism, Vilamoura’s history is very recent, since its construction began at the end of the seventies and beginning of the eighties of last century. It wasn't designed as a fishing village, but as a tourist area.

It has the largest leisure port in Portugal, so it welcomes more than 1000 boats. Beautiful warm beaches await visitors to do aqua sports, delight in its crystal clear waters or, simply, enjoy its soft and golden sands.

Thanks to the large influx of visitors, Vilamoura has become one of the best places, both for tourism and to live permanently. It is very popular among couples in love, so it has become a popular place for honeymoons and has won the title Town of Love.

Vilamoura Attractions

It has been considered as one of the best places to enjoy the best holiday in Portugal. In this beautiful tourist complex, you can find all the fun possible. It has a large variety of parks, golf courses, tourist apartments, 4 and 5 star hotels, in other words, an enormous variety of places for distraction and leisure.

Among the main attractions, we can mention:

Vilamoura Marina

It is the ideal place for lovers of water activities. Considered as the most well known and most visited place of the area. It contains the leisure port which offers a safe place to anchor boats of up to 60 metres in length and has all of the services, including a fuel service.

The Marina of Vilamoura is famous for the variety of water sports that can be done there, including water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, diving, jet-skiing, rowing boats, kayaks and more.

Trips along the Algarve coast by boat are another of the great attractions, you can choose a trip around the region's caves, with the opportunity to try your luck at dolphin watching, visiting the Ponta da Piedade, or a boat crossing of the coast of Lagos, among many other options to choose from.

It has a wide variety of hotels, villas with kitchen, bars of various styles, including those with live music and those offering dancing on tables. It also has a large number of cafés and nightclubs.

Among the different restaurants, there are those offering Portuguese gastronomy, to international and themed cuisine, including those specialising in fish and seafood, Chinese food, Italian food, and others. 

The beaches of Vilamoura

Praia da Falésia

Its name comes from the cliffs that surround it, which offer a majestic spectacle with their different colours. It is a stunning beach spreading 6 kilometres, with soft sand and crystal clear waters with gentle waves, ideal for the whole family.

It is considered the best beach in Portugal, the third in Europe and the twelfth in the entire world. Close to this beach there are a variety of hotels. It can be visited all year round and is easy to access by vehicle.

Vilamoura beach

It is located opposite Vilamoura, right next to the Marina. With fine golden beaches, crystal clear blue waters and gentle waves, it is ideal for children and doing water sports, being one of the most popular for diving thanks to its impressive seabed.

It has all of the services and its facilities are equipped for people who need to use a wheelchair. It also has free tricycles for people with disabilities. Access to the beach can be made by car or walking.

 Quarteira Beach

Located in the town of the same name, this beach offers the visitor white beaches and a calm sea of blue waters which invites you to relax or enjoy different water sports. It has all of the services and can be reached by car or walking from the town.

Praia do Almargem

It is a beautiful beach, particularly recommended for family groups, since it combines the beauty of the sea with a natural reserve which is located behind the beach and houses a nurtured variety of flora and fauna.

It has a length of more than 15 kilometres of fine golden sand, and its crystal clear deep blue waters invite people to swim and do different water activities. It has all of the services and is easy to reach by car.

Aquashow Park

For those who love water parks, this is one that you must visit. It is famous for having the largest water roller coaster in the world. It has all of the services and wave pools, water slides and a lot of fun for adults and children. It also has themed attractions.

Golf courses

For lovers of this particular sport, Vilamoura has 6 golf courses in excellent conditions. In the leisure port there are agencies offering transfers to the different courses and who hire golf clubs. They have golf clubs and give classes to those who want to learn to play this sport.

Roman Ruins of Cerro da Villa

Lovers of ancient culture must visit the Roman Ruins of Cerro da Vila, very near to the leisure port of Vilamoura. There you can admire the remains of an important Roman villa built between 27 B.C and 14 A.D.  This archaeological site has a museum where you can view objects found in the ruins.

Best time to visit Vilamoura

During the months of June to September, there are large numbers of people, because of the temperatures, given that they are ideal for enjoying the different activities on offer and bookings should be made with enough time in advance.

If you want to enjoy a certain amount of peace and quiet and less commotion, the best time of year is autumn and winter, however, these times of year have started to attract more tourists each year.
